Saturday 31st July.

Certainly a better performance than last week. We might well have taken the lead in the opening minute when Davie Weatherston shot just wide from the right hand side, I thought Davie played very well today and was full of running and got into a lot of good positions and he was involved in 3 of the goals. The first after 17 minutes involved a good ball from Johnston to Weatherston and he played a fine ball into the box which was met by a diving header from Holmer which gave Grindlay in the Dumbarton goal no chance.
We got our second after 26 minutes when a ball into the box was handled by a defender and Holmer placed the ball low and wide to Grindleys right from the spot.
Dumbarton came at us a bit at start of second half and after Robinsons punch out landed at a Dumbarton players feet it was knocked back in and looked like a goal until Robinson turned it over the bar, a really good save.A couple of minutes later we were 3 ahead when a good ball from Davie Weatherston played in Allan Johnston and he made no mistake.
Dumbarton did pull one back after 58 minutes when a long ball was played into the box and headed back across goal where Carcary knocked it home.
Allan Johnston made way for Scally after 70 minutes and although Scalls does not look fit he played well and played a nice ball to Weatherston who unselfishly cut it back for Rocco Quinn to make it 4-1.Weatherston was then replaced by McLaren and a few minutes later young Gavin Reilly came on in place of Derek Holmes..
Reilly was involved a lot in the few minutes he had and capped it all with the 5th goal when he showed great composure when he collected the ball in the box before blasting it past former Queens keeper Stephen Grindlay.
I felt Craig Reid yet again had another excellent game and never put a foot wrong, he looks really comfortable on the ball and has become an excellent player over the last year or so. Davie Weatherston as I have already said played very well today and would probably be my man of the match.

Tuesday 13th July.

A crowd of 979 turned up at Palmerston to see Queens take on a very strong Hibs side on a cold wet night more akin to November. The Palmerston pitch looked magnificent.

Queens played a 3-5-2 set up tonight and in the opening period took the game to Hibs before going a goal down in 7 minutes when Galbraith broke through the centre and slotted the ball home for 1-0.
The second goal arrived on 15 minutes when the ball should have been cleared for a corner but the Hibs player kept it in play and put it across to the back post where Ian Murray had an easy knock in.
The third came after 28 minutes when McCausland was out muscled and lost the ball and Stevenson put the ball out of reach of Roddy McKenzie to make it 3-0.
Queens had a lot of the ball and played some neat stuff at times and the heads did not go down. In 24 mins a McLaren back-heel to Burns allowed him away on the right and he put a nice ball into the box and Weatherston shot just wide, then Quinn played a lovely ball through to Carmichael but his shot was well saved by the Hibs keeper. We were 3 down at HT and all the goals were from defensive errors.
Hibs changed keepers for the 2nd half and before the end they used all 7 listed subs where Queens finished the game with the same starting 11. McShane,Orsi,Reilly,Degnan,Thomson and Scally were all unused subs.
3 minutes into the second half Colin Nish picked the ball up in a central position about 30 yards out and hit an unstoppable shot that beat McKenzie and went in of the keepers left hand post. Hibs threatened rarely for the rest of the game and Queens played some neat stuff without finding a real cutting edge in front of goal. The only corner of the game was for Queens after 55 minutes and an effort from Harris was blocked then the rebound went over the top, after 76 mins Paul Burns shot just wide and a couple of minutes later Willie McLaren shot over the top after good work from Johnston and Weatherston.
So in the end Hibs ran out 4-0 winners but Im not too downhearted as we played some neat stuff at times.
Allan Johnston looked good again especially in the first half and I would be quite pleased if we signed him. I though both Harris and Reid played well tonight and Dan Carmichael showed some nice touches and control but never really got a chance to show his pace. From the main stand it was good to hear Kenny Brannigan encouraging his team in a really positive manner and overall this was a good workout for us against a strong and very decent Hibs side.
